Cannonball Read Book #3: Rant by Chuck Palahniuk

"My head's working overtime to swallow the mess of this." That line perfectly sums up my feelings about Rant. I picked up this book because Palahniuk's name was on the spine. I didn't read the synopsis on the inner flaps. After reading the book and the inner flaps, I don't think they would have prepared me for what was hiding inside the virus-illustrated covers.

Rant Casey, sometimes Buster, sometimes Buddy, is a legend. He appears to be responsible for an epidemic outbreak of rabies. This book is an oral biography of Casey told from several different viewpoints of people who grew up with him, raised him, or befriended him when he left home. I don't know what else to say about this book that won't spoil it or that will make the events within make any more sense.

I took some time to get into the story, or what I perceived was the story. Once I became engrossed in Palahniuk's writing I fell deeper into confusion. You know how the first day in a new class, the teacher starts talking and you think to yourself, "I've missed something here. I don't know what this teacher is talking about and the class is only 5 minutes in." That's how this book made me feel.

Don't misunderstand. I think this is a book worth reading. Just be prepared to feel like you may be missing something in the beginning.

  1. I read this one when it first came out, and have read it twice since. I still have no effing clue exactly what's going on.

  2. I felt like an idiot reading the book. Either Palahniuk is a genius or he is always really high.
