Oh, vampires. I am so very not sick of you and all of your iterations. Seriously, I still love vampires. Sparkly ones, ancient ones, sexy ones, evil ones, nice ones, all of them. So when my cousin let me borrow two bags of books and I saw this title in the pile, I thought, "Awwww, yeeeeah."
Jody is a vampire. (As I found out only after I read more than half of the book, her back-story is the subject of Moore's novel Bloodsucking Fiends, which I'll read next.) Jody was lonely and decided to change her boyfriend Tommy into a vampire as well, even though he trapped her in bronze and she only escaped because she turned to mist. Tommy isn't thrilled to be a vampire, especially since Jody didn't ask before she turned him. But they love each other.
Unfortunately, the ancient vampire Elijah that turned Jody against her wishes is trapped in another bronze statue in their loft and he is biding his time until revenge can be exacted. Tommy and his co-workers, the Animals, along with a couple of cops had attacked Elijah's yacht and stolen his art collection. The Animals will not be pleased to see that Tommy is now the undead. Well, once they run out of money and the blue hooker named Blue that they hired in Vegas that now has all of their shares of the stolen art money learns of the vampires. Then the Animals won't be pleased with the vampires or what Blue has in mind for them.
Moore is a genius with a crazed writing style that just works. He has horror and gore but also sweetness and love all floating around in his work. The Goth kid Abby Normal that becomes a minion to Jody and Tommy is written especially realistically. I can easily picture a sixteen year old girl speaking and thinking in the manner that Moore writes her. It's deliciously idiotic and childish while still intent on being above everything. So great.
I would suggest reading Moore, no matter which book you're able to procure. If you don't like his writing then I just don't know what to tell you. Perhaps you need to relax a bit.
i think there are three books about these characters now. I've still only read the first.
ReplyDeleteyou're right though, you can't ever go wrong with a christopher moore novel. Fluke was a hella lotta fun too. first of his i read. when i was done, it took me a bit to remember i had read a comedy--it was all just so endearing that you get caught up in his satirical spoofical worlds.
