Alas, this is the last Christopher Moore book I had to read. I'm fairly sad about it, but this was a good book to end the run. It combines all of the humor, action, sweetness, and awesome that I've come to enjoy in Moore's novels while being something different than those before it. Yep.
Charlie Asher is a Beta Male. I'm not going to explain the Beta Male, because Moore does it well and often throughout the story. Charlie is expecting a baby with his wife Rachel. As a Beta Male, Charlie is concerned that new baby Sophie may not have the correct number of fingers and toes. He's also concerned that she may have had a tail at some point, removed by the hospital when he wasn't looking. He's an over-imaginative guy, made so by his love for his wife and new daughter. That makes what happens next such a life-crumbling experience.
I suppose this is SPOILER, but it is revealed in the first few pages of the novel. Rachel dies. Charlie returns to Rachel's hospital room just in time to see a very tall black man in a mint green suit in her room. Baby Sophie sees the man as well and giggles and coos at him. Charlie is distraught over losing his wife and attempts to raise Sophie as a single father while also running his second-hand shop. And while retrieving soul vessels. That too.
I don't want to go into too much detail here. As well-written as the book is, if I give you too much information, you'll figure out some things like I did. And I want you to figure those things out as you read so that you can enjoy it as much as I did. Also, I know that Christopher Moore isn't reading this, but PLEASE WRITE SOME MORE BOOKS. Preferably with more Theo. Thanks.
